VISION
City on a Hill (COAH) Summer exists to expose college students and young adults to church planting in Boston through the City on a Hill Network of neighborhood churches and to develop lifelong disciples of Jesus.
GOALS
In Our Community
Learn the Place: To effectively share the gospel and make disciples, we need to have a deep understanding of the place we are planting and the people we are reaching. Like Paul in Athens, we will observe the goals, values, and idols of our community so that we can clearly and contextually speak the gospel into our community (Acts 17:16-23). Interns will learn how to become “experts” in knowing a place and a people.
Love the People: We will take steps to actively engage our neighbors with love and good works with the intent of building relationships. In accordance with Jesus’ teaching, we will seek to exude love and good works towards others in such a way that people will give glory to our Father in heaven (Mt 5:14-16; 22:37-40, cf. Jer 29:7). Interns will actively serve our neighbors through hands-on initiatives, events, and programs.
Lead in Relationship: We learn and love genuinely, without an ulterior motive. Yet, at the same time, we learn and love people purposefully, with the ultimate motive of leading them to learn the gospel and experience God’s love. We will seek to hold together the Great Commandment and the Great Commission, knowing that especially in a place like Boston, the decision to repent and believe the gospel often comes about through a genuine, enduring relationship between a Christian and a non-Christian (Mt 22:37-40; 28:18-20). Interns will build genuine gospel-centered relationships with those who are lost, with the aim of helping them find life in Christ.
In Our Church
Learning the Gospel: The gospel is of “first importance” (1 Cor 15:3). The gospel is the life-giving message by which we become Christians, and it is the message that God continues to use to transform us as Christians (2 Cor 3:17-4:6; 2 Pt 1:5-15). To be and make disciples of Jesus, we must press deeper and deeper into knowing Jesus, and the Gospel that he has accomplished in his life, death and resurrection (1 Cor 15:1-5; Phil 3:8-15). Interns will learn the gospel alongside our church as they attend our Sunday gatherings and participate in our discipleship groups.
Living as Family: To be and make disciples, we must do so in deep relationship with one another (Col 2:19). The gospel saves us to not only have a relationship with the Father, but to do so in the context of his Family (Eph 2:19). We will endeavor to cultivate a church where we know one another and are known, care for one another, and are cared for, love one another and are loved. In this way, the message of the gospel brings about a culture of the gospel in our midst. Interns will live as family alongside as they build deep relationships with our membership and leaders and learn what church looks like in Boston.
Going on Mission: God’s Mission is central to the purpose of God’s Church (Mt 28:18-20) and God’s church is central to God’s Mission (Eph 3:10), Every disciple is commissioned to go and make disciples, either through their participating in an existing local church or through their planting of a new local church. It is our earnest desire, not to be a culdesac for the Great Commission, but a conduit to the ends of the earth, both personally and corporately, starting in our own community. Interns will go on mission alongside us in our neighborhood, and from us as they are sent back into their colleges, churches, and careers (maybe even ending up back in Boston!).
